Today in the Library, 3rd and 4th grade students will be continuing their study of the historical fiction genre. Historical fiction is a story with fictional characters, but the setting and other details are based on actual history. Henry's Freedom Box is the story for today. It tells of a slave that mailed himself to the north to freedom in the 1800's. Students will listen to the story and then complete a word search with vocabulary words from this topic: plantation, abolitionist, slave, etc. Last week, these students watched a video, Follow the Drinking Gourd, which depicted an escape to freedom utilizing the Underground Railroad system. Take time to discuss this important topic with your children and make sure they understand the meaning of Historical Fiction. There are book displays of many popular Historical Fiction titles in the elementary library throughout the month of November. Encourage your child to check out one of these titles and read it together as a family!
